Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website

Hey All,

Welcome to the new Best of Joomla website!

After several months of work and the efforts of all the people included, we are proud to present you our new work. The best of Joomla! is widening its perspective toward a more friendly, community oriented network, which aims to bring all the cool stuff about joomla under one roof, supporting and promoting the great work of the Joomla core team.

Vision
-------
Overall, we tried to bring the missing parts of joomla network in one place, such as templates and also improve the current services which other sites have been also providing, such as news/resources.

Features
--------
Users can freely post thier templates, resources, projects, including open-source and commercial ones to various sections of the site.

To promote your abilities we included a section called "portfolios" for you to add what you have done so far there. This can be a showcase of your works, templates, componenets,... This will help you to get noticed in projects section and easier referencing.

Profiles section is aiming to bring all the activities about an individual in one place. There we have a scoring feature which summarizes your activity in the community.

Feel free to use filters in the templates and resources sections to narrow down your searches. You should have Javascript and cookies enabled to benefit from these features.

You are welcome to add your templates, others' (including the author credits) and add your Joomla/other related resources. The original authors of the items (e.g. Template providers) are also welcome to claim the access rights to their items/templates in order to update/extend them.

To be extended...

Please consider that the new website will have some bugs, glitches and errors. If you find any, please post here in the forums and we will try to fix them asap. Also, feature requests are welcome too.

Most excellent. Will take a while getting used to all the new features but well worth the wait I must say.

very nice and i love your fireboard theme as well.. way to rock the joomla community man

p.s the discussion and category view.. friken genius you guys one upped vbulletin and the other popular paid forum softwares there.. be proud.
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by snicers01 Dec 07 19:14
Good looking site definitely. But consider that there are many sites already around which aim to build up a community on this topics which you guys aiming for. I don't understand the strategy about the templates as this will focus too wide in my opinion. There are many unsolved issues about fireboard itself, e.g. best of joomlas communications about the discussion bot where the public often hears: "we will release soon" or about the new template where it is said: "that's a custom system we will release soon". BTW, the communication thing is a joomla thing and that's why more and and more people change to Drupal, Typo3 or even Zope.

I wish you all the best with the new site and aims and I hope that it will be as successful as the Fireboard component. The FireMessage component look promising (the other messaging systems are all crap) If you want one tip: I want to sent messages from everywhere, a profile, the board, wherever I am at a site, but I don't want to go to the components. Means the feature request is to have a component that opens as a popup and let me sent messages from a popup. Big social networks like Studivz.net (german) or facebook already using this kind of messaging system and it's worth implementing it.

All the best!
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Putte01 Dec 07 18:03
When will the download section in the menu work?
Is seems like the most of it is gone?
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Alex Pinard01 Dec 07 17:56
how release by itself for now then members can mess around with my might even get a few developers to star creating this based on the structure you now i would love to get it to my programmer I hire to help me out when no support is available for joomla.
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Danial T.01 Dec 07 17:49
Hey All,

@Numinu case:
We would be glad to release it, but this is a heavily modified theme. So, it is the question of time if we can manage to deliver it to the next release

@Idea behind forum:
Inspiration: Vanilla forum
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Danial T.02 Dec 07 10:55
Well, Firemessage is already pretty stable, only has small bugs. So it is a question of enough man power. also you don't need to be a dev to help, you can help on forums too.

cheers

Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Alex Pinard01 Dec 07 16:17

Thank you for your reply, i would love to help but i don't have any kind of knowledge regarding programming lol i have a small comunity i can test it on my site thats all i can do.

but from your reply i think it will take atleast 2-3 months to get a working and bug free pms system for fireboard, judging from the boj website i thought it was almost done and the team were ready to release it anytime soon.

iam forced to use another pms system, cause right now beside our forum our members can't contact each other.

thanks again for a great component
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Indra01 Dec 07 16:55
The new web site is cool.
Congratulation!

I do hope that the development of Fireboard 1.1 is on the way as there are several annoying bugs in Fireboard 1.0.3
FB 1.0.3 is lacking some of essential features of good forum e.g. ban user, user can subscribe to certain forum, etc.
The idea is to make the forum to be similar with Yahoo Groups except that the user has to come to website instead of just sending email to post message.

However, currently Fireboard is still the best forum extension for Joomla.
Some bridge to SMF or VBulettin is not a good idea.

If only I had sound capability in PHP & MySQL, I would offer myself to support Fireboard development team.
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Joel01 Dec 07 16:12

Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Danial T.02 Dec 07 09:51
Hey All,

grumblemarc and nickb are right. many things have happened behind the scences and we try to get over them the best way. So, here we are, with only a bit of time left we wanted to finish this project that was left on table for looong time.

We will soon put a project about Firemessage and when we get enough developers and volunteer people we will release it. With the current load of Fireboard it would be crazy to add another load and make people sad by not being able to support it. This will happen in a day or two.

We need more people on Dev side and with current attitudes of people (only taking) instant results are not possible. Thanks to the effort of guys like Miro and grumblemarc, Jan erik and Oracle you can see all the things coming. So, if you want it faster, as I say always, give us a hand, like nickb does. You are totally welcome.

and well, final word, you should not mind people like babylon. His/her attitude has been always like that and I don't want to ban people. We all have full time jobs (most of people on dev team) and people like greatpixels have 17hr/d jobs. If we do something we cut from our own resting/private lives. It's just the question that if it were you, would you do it too?

so, help us help you

Cheers

Well i suggest everybody of FB continues to work on a next release with the groups support.
personaly im not interested in "how great this site looks.."
way i see it you left everybody out in the cold.

and we should report any bugs?
you must be joking danialt..
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Ryan02 Dec 07 02:57
Wow, this site now looks even better than before! This is one of the best looking sites I've seen in a while. AWESOME JOB to the team who put it together.

Now, when are we going to see the SMF to FB converter? Any word on this? This should be your next step to bring donations into your project and bring more and more support, beta testers, and programmers into help you. WE'LL DO ANYTHING FOR A CONVERTER, ANYTHING!
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by babylon02 Dec 07 03:47

lol, upset because you didn't get a template as soon as you ask for it. They already said they will include it with the next release.
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Marc A. Ross02 Dec 07 04:58
SOME think that open source means that everything they see they are entitled to. If they do not get it then they throw tantrums; especially when things do not go the way they think they should.

I really do not think people are grasping the concept that people are doing this on their own free time. As I understand it Danial was in the midst of his PHD. PHD!!! Anyone here know what kind of time and effort goes into obtaining one of these? Not many I can say for sure. But I can tell you one thing, were I getting MY PHD Fireboard would NOT be the first thing I thought about when I woke up in the morning. One of the team was not in very good health and has not been seen on the forums in quite some time. Did anyone notice his absence?

The point being that these people have lives just like we do and unfortunately FB is not the biggest priority most of the time.

The general Fireboard community is not privy to the happenings behind the scenes. For the most part it seems not to matter to most of the 10K+ members of the forums (and lord knows HOW many more people that have actually downloaded Fireboard). MOST of them are patient enough to realize that good things take time. MOST of them know that MOST of these new features will make it into future releases and if some of them do NOT then they are satisfied with that too. BUT there always have to be the few that want to offer speculation in place of actual facts. These are the ones that want to tell the FB team what it should be doing based on what is more important to themselves ALL THE WHILE not knowing ANYTHING about what is going on behind the scenes. Those kinds of people will NEVER be satisfied and will ALWAYS be offering their opinions and demanding one thing or another.

So to the BOJ team, I applaud your efforts. Just when everyone thought that FB was the greatest thing for Joomla since sliced bread you come along and get everyones mouth salivating with the site makeover and a ton of new features. If you can do that part-time I can only imagine what FB will look like now that you have a little more time and people on the project.

Now, about giving mods the ability to ban people...
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by nick02 Dec 07 05:08
Yep, great up for danialt and his PHD for the OS community worldwide and for the BOJ project. I hope sometime critics are welcome, as being in the middle of my phd too...critics are the only things I like as they help you understand and see things from others perspectives, understnding problems and widening ur mindset.

Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by Chris05 Feb 08 04:54
If you still need some Support for Firemessage, I'd be willing to join the Team

As I'm just in the process of re-designing and spicing up our site (check http://v2.overdose.at - Work in Progress atm), I'm also switching from Joomlaboard to Fireboard (not yet online, I'm still working on the Template) and I could also switch from myPMS to FireMessage for testing-purposes (we've got some 100 users, who message each other quite a lot).
I could probably also help diagnosing and fixing errors (if there are any ), since I work with Joomla and PHP/MySQL in general on a daily basis...

Let me know, what you think
Re:Announcement: Bestofjoomla! new website by dave05 Mar 08 20:40
I can see this question has been asked before but I cannot find a complete response... I am also hoping to get maybe an updated answer.

The template the "best of joomla" team is forum their forum is AWESOME to say the least. Is a similar version available for download? I would also be willing to pay for a fireboard template like this. Any suggestions.

Thanks guys. This template is so inspiring for the fireboard project.
