OK to my simple head (and it is simple!) Groups would only need a fairly straighforward process to implement:

- Add 2 groups column to the category, which would contain group numbers seperated by comas (one column for read one for write)
- Add some code to check if user group = category group at the points it currently runs the checks for 'registered' etc before showing the view, post and ?on receiving a post.

Is it as simple as that?

If it is I'm quite happy to begin disecting the code to add those features.

I realise there are extra bits like adding somewhere to edit the groups for the cats and somewhere to edit a users group...

Like the subscribe to cat instead of thread I wouldn't want to go down the wrong track and end up with something that wouldn't then be future proof for a 1.1 release. It just seems to be a major request on this site... and doesn't seem too trick to me to script...

Thoughts from devlopers before I commence would be useful.
