Re:Did this Fireboard project die? 6 Months ago
Well my PHPBB3 is installed and I will go with the RokBridge from: http://www.rocketwerx.com

Rokbridge http://www.rocketwerx.com/products/rokbridge/overview

It will take me a few hours to have everything running but I check some websites running this one and they look very good and with the advantages and security of Phpbb3

In the end I think a bridge to a Full dedicated open source forum project is the way to go. And the real experts in the matter, Joomla.org, are using it so is very unlikely that they are wrong about it.

well if there was no alternative, I would have done too, but there's someone from joomla on fireboard 2.0 also, I believe it's a solution not to give an unfair advantage to fireboard agaunst other form extensons, as agora or jjboo

on the other hand the people in joomlapolis still rely in joomlaboard

I'm just going to say that WHY??? in the name of GOD I did not find the Phpbb3 bridge before . Anybody that does not have the most simple idea of html or php can install the Phpbb3 forum and that bridge in just half an hour. It was a piece of cake. Works without problems, people try it. Its for joomla 1.5 and you will have the same forum that www.joomla.org uses. Just go to http://www.rocketwerx.com/products/rokbridge/overview and read the easy instructions for the installation and if anyone needs a hand just drop me a private message. I no expert but I will help in anyway that I can. You only need a FTP program to access the folders of your joomla website and the rest is a piece of cake.

also remember that this bridge isn't stable yet, and main developer after getting donations left the project, or just don't have time to communicate

Well, for me was really easy and I will do lots of beta testing with everything, but at least is more stable than fireboard and full of options that at the current speed of fireboard development will take EONs to be implemented. And it was so easy. It just need a simple bunch of files that had only a few lines of code in each one, so for me It will be a piece of cake to fix anything that arise or at least I hope so.

Obvously a great solution for present, but not best for a long term installation, as file modifing, will affect future upgrades.

I prefer to have an unbridged forum, or wait for fb 2.0 than mess with files... this is why I prefer CBconnector over rokbridge.

Anyway, I keep prefering to have a native joomla board, than a bridged one.

If I was bulding only a forum, I woudl go with IPB if I can afford it, or SMF

I repeat the bridge was so easy with the new joomla 1.5 login options that scares me. I looks just like any other login option like gmail login in joomla. I hope joomla dev team just includes this excellent option by default in their next joomla release. After all they are using that forum.

Re:Did this Fireboard project die? 6 Months ago
I've been watching this thread for a while, because I came to Joomla! for the first time and saw that the only real forum module to use was Fireboard. The only problem being that Joomla! would have to run in legacy mode, but a workable solution.

However, I soon discovered that all was not well and my beta testers were having problems with the access levels. I was able to fix the registered users issue by collating various bits of information from posted messages and I published all of my fixes for the community. I helped out another newbie who had the same problem.

Unfortunatley, I have an issue with child boards and not one person has replied to my request for help.

Consequently, I too have removed my Fireboard forum [fully integrated :( ] and gone back to my faithful PHPBB3 [bridged using JFusion - ] and I now need to get my beta testers back online and also consider how this will affect other modules [e-commerce for instance] that I would have expected to just plug in. I'm even now thinking about using PHPBB3 as my main site and simply using Joomla! for some content - not the project I'd intended or promised my customer

I think Fireboard is a great forum component but it hasn't made the transition to Joomla! 1.5 compatibility quickly enough and for people like me, who have a simple problem that ought to be very easily remedied either by a core patch or by someone else who's fixed their own board - I'm surely not the only user who can't make child boards work with no public access - it then becomes something of a liability and takes up too much time. If anyone saw my post asking for help and knows the answer but didn't respond - why?

I do understand what OS is all about, and I believe in it. I'm not a pro coder but I can get around a PHP/MySQL application and make it do what I want, or write my own code, but OS it not an excuse for software that doesn't work properly.

Apologies if I've strayed a bit off topic in parts, but I wanted to try to explain reasons why I left Fireboard, which I guess are no different to many others who've come here but gone away disappointed.

When Fireboard releases a 1.5 compatible version, fully integrated and with basic flaws resolved, I would gladly look again. I just hope my project hasn't gone too far by then to turn back.
