Permissions issue. 4 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Hi all. Im very very new to this board and to fireboard and I have an issue. Here is the whole history.

I just had a website built by clansandguilds and they have included a fireboard forum.

I set everything up and started to move topics over from our old forum. One of my kinship officers created a test account so I could test permissions and this is what has happened ....

TestNoobette is a registered user. She can see only the public stuff. GREAT!
I promote TestNoobette to Author (member level) she can see the member area. GREAT!
I promote TestNoobette to Editor (officer level) she can see the officer forum. GREAT!
I DEMOTE TestNoobette back to anything lower than Editor (author or registered member) and she can STILL see the officer forum and everything before it.
NOT GREAT!
We have tried logging out, logging back in, not allowing child groups, allowing child groups, creating new test accounts .. we have tried it all.

Now they told me the following ....

The forums use cookies to store the level the person is at if you demote someone and they login in the next little while the session cookie will still have them at the previous level. It is not normal for people to be demoted in a typical forum setting, they are set at the level and left there forever. If you demote someone they will be able to see the higher levels until the session cookie is re-set normally 20-30 minutes.

To which I responded ...

Unfortunately, I logged out and logged back in under that test name more than 2 hours later and it was still the case that I could see the officer forum with it. That could be an issue under some circumstances …

Normally we wouldn’t have a problem… but if someone leaves the kin, we need to demote them to public.. or registered user, making sure they cant see the member area anymore. And if someone who is an officer decides to no longer be an officer, or we feel the need to demote them to member again for whatever reason… we need to ensure they wont see the officer area anymore.

Is there any way around this ? Maybe a way to force the cookie reset after a certain length of time … or something along those lines ?

And then .... I was sent here.

So theres my problem and its lengthy history.

HELP !!!!!

I'm getting the same exactly thing what you're having, it's very frustrating and I expected better from the new Fireboard release (1.0.5) which still did not fix the forum permission issue. If someone could tell me a wayaround for this, other than having to delete a certain user to demolish their full access, then that'd be nice. Until then, I'm seriously disappointed by how bloatedness Joomla/Fireboard is due to forum permission issue such as above.

The only workarounds were the same as in 1.0.4. Unfortunately they probably no longer work with 1.0.5.

I have to say that overall I am highly disapointed in fireboard as a forum.

I used to use a free forum which used phpbb and it had FAR more functionality. I could create any number of user levels and permission allowances, I could create polls in the posts, I could do so very many things I cannot do with this forum.

I have to say I am not happy at all with it, and if I could get the people who built my website to give me anything else but fireboard, I would jump at the chance.

Sorry guys. I just think its terrible.

Actually fireboard caches permissions for granted forums in table jos_fb_sessions in column 'allowed'. Just update value for the user, and you should be ok.

My site is hosted on the server for the company who built it. I do not have access to those files.

This means in order to use the fix you suggested I have to e mail them every time someone leaves or is demoted or whatever.

It hardly ever happens, but if it did why shouldnt I just be able to go to the back end of my site, to user permissions and do it myself

Again, i am very disapointed with this board as a whole,I hope it is vastly improved, or that I am given the option to dump it.

Agora is the only other integrated forum with the features you require but not yet for J1.5. Otherwise a standalone or bridged solution is your only other option.

I do appreciate the feedback sincerely. Its nice to know my options so I can let them know and ask questions ...

I dont mean to sound terrible. I just find the fireboard difficult to deal with and sorely lacking in content

Everybody has its own demands. Does Joomla have a robust permission management, yet used by millions? your same words are valid for Joomla as well. Permission management is a very tedious and difficult task. You can have of course just something implemented, but where do you want to go with that? needless to say that a lousy system will bring your forum today and in future to knees. Most of the time on FireBoard 2 has been spent on group management. When running it you will see 1 query for groups, not 1 query per each request, e.g. each forum title, etc.

So, either go with a forum that will have a robust one in near future, or go on with yet another forum which advocates that it has, derived from punbb and modified heavily, or a bridge. It all depends on you. Just please do not degrade all the effort of people by one liners. There have been thousands of manhour in this project and we appreciate constructive suggestions.

Good luck

Danial. I have been with FireBoard from the beginning. I have watched how the user base has been blatantly ignored by you personally for months. It is only recently that you make your presence again known when fxstein revived the forum with 1.0.5 project. You make the announcement of 2.0 (coincidentally right after Agora and Simplest Forum started gaining speed) and all the promises that come with it and all that has gone on in the past is supposed to be forgotten? Not really.

You have driven off your project manager & all moderators with your lack of communication and left them and the community to fend for themselves. You have no practical working knowledge of how your own component even works. I watch you fumble to answer very simple troubleshooting questions so you do not inspire confidence in me.

I have watched you promise things like since the beginning and fall down on them with feeble explanations. Your support track record is pretty poor up to this point and to this you can admit.

It is only when someone suggests alternatives you want to speak out. Sure. Bridges are not the answer and Agora my be ported over from PunBB but those people listen to their users. And it actually works the way one would expect a forum to work. No promises have to be made things just happen when they need to happen. They picked a defunct extension, JUST LIKE YOU DID, and made it work. Sorry you picked a dog like JoomlaBoard to work with. So trying to dog them out is not working to sway anyone. Now that they have converters (something else you promised) people are switching. I think I will too.

Almost 3/4 of a year without any development whatsoever has left a foul taste in many of your users past and present. Newbies have no clue what they are getting themselves into.

I think I'm going to finally go the route I suggested. Bye-bye Fireboard.
