This has fixed my problem right up, and had I come along 30 minutes later would have avoided some smart-arsed comments and ego coming from one of the moderators on this site in another thread.

You know I may have/do come off as smart-assed but I never resorted to outright name calling as you have. As I already stated, I tried only to help. You didn't want help. You only wanted a hand-out. Sorry I did not understand that. I would have left well enough alone if I did.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh where did I call you a name? Unless "one of the moderators" is a "name"?

Every other member of this forum who downloads and uses Racoons patch above is also after a hand-out are they??? No, I think they are after help, which has been provided above.

you have an excellent workaround. solves the issues i have. i'll join the others in using this while waiting for an official patch from the core team. very well done @racoon.

That looks like a problem with Virtuemart. Looks like something has gone wrong with the more images hack/plugin.

Well that looks like a different problem then. I think this has been given a fix. Please check the 1.0.4 Upgrade thread.
