TOPIC: JACL Patch

Re:JACL Patch 1 Year, 8 Months ago
I am another one putting my hand up for this patch. I posted on the BYOS Tech forum asking if they were going to write one but no reply as yet. I have JACL installed but I can't use the usergroups I made until Fireboard is patched for JACL

Out of curiosity, in what order did everyone install their JACL and Fireboard? Because I installed Fireboard, and then Jacl, and the new usergroups show up for me. Maybe its the order that counts.

The usergroups show up in Fireboard but don't seem to be working... I am having other serious problems with my FB installation anyway

Re:JACL Patch 1 Year, 8 Months ago
They're working fine for me, I've created a user and moved him through all my groups and he could see/use the boards each group had access to.

Where it acts strange for me is when I move the user to a group that doesn't have access to boards his previous group had access to, he still sees and can post to those boards if he's still browsing the site. But it acted this way when it was Joomlaboard, and the solution is to wait until the person is offline, change their group, and then make sure they're logged off in the Joomla Administrator. The next time they open their browser, they'll see only the groups they have access to.

I may not have mine set up the ideal way, but here's how I have my groups structured if it's helpful to anyone:

It's a simple structure, it's set up so each group has access to everything its parent group has access to (make sure you 'allow child groups' when setting up forum permissions if you use this format), plus some of its own permissions.

I have installed JACL first, later Fireboard. So it seems that make sense. Any ideas how I can get the JACL usergroups into fireboard?

I can see / use my JACL groups, but it doesn't matter if I do or not. "Registered" users can see my forums that are restricted to other JACL groups that are not child group enabled. Perhaps a more accurate way to state it is that one group cannot see the board for another until they are added to the allowed group... but no matter what you do after you add them to the allowed group, they will always be able to see the board.

Example: I have a board named "Officers Only". I have users in a group called Members and a few other users in a group called Officers. Elections are held. Old officers are voted off and new officers are appointed. I take the old officers voted off and put them in the Members group. I put the new officers into the Officers group. Now the new officers can see the Officers Only board -- but so can the old officers.

It seems once you can see a board, you can always see that board no matter what JACL groups you are assigned to.

You know, all seemed to be fine - until I posted here . I see exactly what you're saying, it's the same problem we had with Joomlaboard 1.1.4, and it ISN'T working for me either - I'm trying to do the same thing you are. If you log that user out, then close the browser that user was using, you should see only the forums that user's groups has access to - none of the child groups' forums will show except those the forums that are accessible by "Registered" users.

There's a patch that will allow you to use access levels instead of user groups, but I think I tried that in Joomlaboard and ran into other problems or it just didn't work - I remember telling myself I'd never install it again for one reason or another...if someone takes the time to mod it for Fireboard I may try again, but I'm just getting sick of JACL.

We need an alternative - will it work if we become BYOSTECH charted members? Doubt it. Are there other group management components that aren't posted on the Joomla extensions site? I think it's about time for someone to make one - Joomla devs said they'd be doing it but not for quite a while. In the meantime...I'm starting to think that nasty nasty PHP-Nuke may be the best choice for my application. I keep running into walls and JACL seems to be what's erecting them.

An alternative to JACL is in the works over at Joomlapolis, if I'm not mistaken. However it isn't yet a reality. So, for the time being, we have what we have. JACL is the best "groups" permission component as far as I have experienced...

An interesting remark... that the same problem existed in Joomlaboard. Perhaps the problem isn't JACL at all? I've never had permissions problems like this in any other compnent that is JACL aware...

I've thought that too, you'd think someone (whoever it is) would have fixed it by now - I also had the same problem with JB 1.1.5, which is why my sites are stuck running JB 1.1.3 at the moment - I was hoping that moving from JB to FB would make that issue go away, maybe in an upcoming patch or release...I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, I'm not about to start looking a gift horse in the mouth, as they say in the midwest. These guys are working awfully hard to put out a quality component. I think they're on the right track, too. It's just really difficult sometimes to be "this close" [holding fingers a millimeter apart] and know that it is almost there... I have GOT to learn to code so I can be more useful to the developers one day...
