Re:Another plea for restricted forums 1 Year ago
So, if I were to use GroupJive now for group-restricted forums, would I be able to switch entirely from GroupJive to the to-be-released Fireboard 1.5 forum without issues?

It would be a pain to use GroupJive now and then have to keep using it when 1.5 arrives. Thanks.

Hi

The short answer about GJ/FB integration somehow upgrading to FB 1.5 stand alone when the time comes...is "no it will not do that".

FireBoard 1.5 is a unique and "from the ground up" vision of Danial and Miro and has in no way "any relation" to GroupJive.

GroupJive will give you Groups today and it will provide continued integration in the future since the GJ core team has made a commitment to each other and the community to continue into Joomla!'s future. When BofJ does release FB 1.5 it makes sense for GroupJive to continue integration. Moving the two together onto one single FireBoard installation is a long shot at best though and there is no intent at this time to "support" a method to accomplish a migration from GJ/FB combo to FB alone.

I do see GroupJive giving an effort to supporting the move from one GJ/FB integration to another GJ/FB integration as both components progress.

From my reading here, BofJ has their own specific vision for FireBoard. I'm sure the next gen version will be very cool and GroupJive is very supportive of the community here even though the relationship is "unofficial". Remember that GJ and FB's integration actually began with SimpleBoard and JoomlaBoard. However, each community in Joomla is a seperate node in the Joomla space and the only root is Joomla! itself. I can share that my understanding is GroupJive will continue to integrate with FB and possibly phpBB as well in the future but please don't make plans based on a foundation that suggests you will be able to seemlessly migrate from a GJ/FB integration to FireBoard 1.5 all by itself. This will not happen. BestOfJoomla is not (that I know of) basing any development on what GJ does today or intends to do tomorrow and GroupJive is simply staying tuned to what the FB team here decides to do before we take our next integration steps with GroupJive.

MY SUGGESTION: With Joomla! itself in a state of change, J1.5 just around the corner and many different plans from many different dev teams on their own futures, IMO it is best to go with what works today and consider tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Joomla! is somewhat of a nomadic community, people and ideas do come and go. This tends to make an upgrade path a bit more challenging than in other more structured camps ... but if you choose "components" with strong communities and stay in tune with the devs, you can at least make "informed" choices.

again... short answer is "no". Check out posts by Danial and Miro to check status of when FB 1.5 might make the download page.

hope this helps

BTW (in the short term) if you are planning on lining up access control for the Joomla! future look at RokACL as it begins to be implemented into J1.6. That would also be something to keep an eye on! (see Andrew's article)

I desperately need a secure/restricted/private forum area that is only available to members that I designate. When will this be functionality be available in FB?

The Group Jive option is not as secure as I need it to be.

Any of you folks that use GroupJive having issues with the various LATEST POSTS modules available? We use JACLPlus and can't get the LATEST POST modules to show the web visitors only the latest posts on the forum groups they are limited to seeing. Visitors can see new posts on private and administrativee boards that they shouldnt. They'll click on the latest posts link only to be displayed a message that they dont have access to that message.

I am with you on that. This is a must have for any forum software as I see it. You must have Private/Hidden forums if nothing else for deleted posts (i keep these in a hidden forum in case they are needed later for evidence) and also for admin communication

My site also has user level forums for different member levels, because we have a purchase membership etc and also we have secret forums etc.

I am really looking to come over from e107 to Joomla but dont want a seperate forum software to the site framework so really depend on this feature

I am going to write this in natively to Fireboard. I am going to use the latest stable release and allow users to be added on a user by user basis. I will try to keep up with all future versions until it is apart of the core of the component.

I am an experience PHP programmer but this will be my first Joomla coding, so will need testers etc.

Fingers crossed it shouldn't be too hard.

The idea will be as follows
- New database table (fb_private_user)
- new function that checks forum access
- hide forum from view in both cat list and forum view unless Super Admin or user with perms
- Admin function to add users to forums

The first release will assume a forum is public unless it has a user in fb_private_user table, I may change this later, however I think I should only have to add a grand total of 1 new SQL query to the frontend, and hopefully there shouldn't be a major speed issue

Here is the post I am using to track progress

A mention of RokACL there from wwvine. I do hope that any dev work going towards groups and group ACL will incorporate the strong possibility of RokACL being rolled into Joomla 1.6. I would hate to see too many group systems developed, none compatible or interchangeable with each other. One of the huge benefits of Fireboard is the 'nativeness' of the component (no bridges, wrappers etc). Surely any group ACL in Fireboard should carry on the tradition and be forwards compatible with 1.6 if at all possible at this stage.

Hopefully, wwvine's comment is suggesting that Groupjive might also follow a similar track(?).

FYI - we use jaclplus. One of our guys is a charter member. We sent them the latest post module and they hacked it to work for our site. Guess that was the only way for us to get one working.
