Hi
The short answer about GJ/FB integration somehow upgrading to
FB 1.5 stand alone when the time comes...is "no it will not do that".
FireBoard 1.5 is a unique and "from the ground up" vision of Danial and Miro and has in no way "any relation" to GroupJive.
GroupJive will give you Groups today and it will provide continued integration in the future since the GJ core team has made a commitment to each other and the community to continue into Joomla!'s future. When BofJ does release FB 1.5 it makes sense for GroupJive to continue integration. Moving the two together onto one single FireBoard installation is a long shot at best though and there is no intent at this time to "support" a method to accomplish a migration from GJ/FB combo to FB alone.
I do see GroupJive giving an effort to supporting the move from one GJ/FB integration to another GJ/FB integration as both components progress.
From my reading here, BofJ has their own specific vision for FireBoard. I'm sure the next gen version will be very cool and GroupJive is very supportive of the community here even though the relationship is "unofficial". Remember that GJ and FB's integration actually began with SimpleBoard and JoomlaBoard. However, each community in Joomla is a seperate node in the Joomla space and the only root is Joomla! itself. I can share that my understanding is GroupJive will continue to integrate with FB and possibly phpBB as well in the future but please don't make plans based on a foundation that suggests you will be able to seemlessly migrate from a GJ/FB integration to FireBoard 1.5 all by itself. This will not happen. BestOfJoomla is not (that I know of) basing any development on what GJ does today or intends to do tomorrow and GroupJive is simply staying tuned to what the FB team here decides to do before we take our next integration steps with GroupJive.
MY SUGGESTION: With Joomla! itself in a state of change, J1.5 just around the corner and many different plans from many different dev teams on their own futures, IMO it is best to go with what works today and consider tomorrow when tomorrow comes. Joomla! is somewhat of a nomadic community, people and ideas do come and go. This tends to make an upgrade path a bit more challenging than in other more structured camps ... but if you choose "components" with strong communities and stay in tune with the devs, you can at least make "informed" choices.
again... short answer is "no". Check out posts by Danial and Miro to check status of when FB 1.5 might make the download page.
hope this helps
BTW (in the short term) if you are planning on lining up access control for the Joomla! future look at RokACL as it begins to be implemented into J1.6. That would also be something to keep an eye on! (
