Thats a good point, although who really uses email notifications, oh also I think its a bit annoying to automatically subscribe you to every topic you post in by default. That kinda sucks..

auto-notification is not my problem

but i think it's not that necessary to get a mail for every reply that is posted to a single topic *spam*
=> 1 notification-mail for 1 or more answers per topic is enough

Auto-notification and subscribe topic forums are option you can configure under your profile.

Just for the argument, if I had to go to forums to see if there are new replays to my question... would be like to visit a blog and look for new posts. For me Auto-notification does a similar job to RSS and feed reader.
If you use it or not, its not the case here.
Some do, some don't.

My point is that the subject of those messages need to be based on the subject of the topic.
With SMF it works perfectly.
So under Fireboard, soon or later it should do the same.
The option is there, it should work properly.
The "when" I hope would be a matter of "programmer's free time"

Re:Notification emails 1 Year, 5 Months ago
A friend of mine in Paris who has been professionally (meaning it's her job) moderating worldwide online discussions for years, uses mailing lists (which she calls "fora" or "forums", instead of message boards like FB or SMF. She tells me that if you want people to participate in these dialogs the messages need to go to them via email. In other words, if someone has to log in to a specific website to read posts and post replies, they are less likely to participate than if the posts arrive in their inbox and they can post a reply via email, as suggested elsewhere in "Wishlist and Suggestions".

I'm not suggesting that folks should dump FB and use a mail list, but I do think that if users subscribe to a thread, their email notifications should include not only new post's subject, but also the message text. Perhaps this could even be an option set through each user's profile. The result would be a more flexible system appealing to a broader user base. And this is a feature of some existing forms systems, like phpBB and the forum built in to Exponent CMS http://www.exponentcms.org/.

Actually, in my dreams, you should also optionally be able to reply to a thread by replying to the notification email. FB would then be a complete hybrid between forum/message board and mail list.

Having had the experience of spending considerable time installing, templating and configuring SMF for an organization with over 1000 members and seeing only about twenty posts in a whole year, for me it would be a dream come true.

It works like you want, under Fireboard.

The only problem its the messages subject that should be different for each topic (with the topic subject acting has the mail subject

Your topic reply sent an email to me with subject:

New post notification from FireBoard Community

and the message body:
[code:1]
[User Real Name],
A new post has been made to a topic to which you have subscribed on the FireBoard Community forum
Subject: 'Re:Notification emails' in Forum: 'Wishlist and Suggestions'
Posted by: vallesano

You can administer your subscriptions by following the 'my profile' link on the forum home page after you have logged in on the site. From your profile you can also unsubscribe from the topic.

So several notify have same subject.. and (with Gmail) are grouped together.
I would prefer that each topic notification has a different subject

Ahhh!..
Yes. Well, pardon my nearsightedness. In my rush to conclusions I missed everything. Not only your meaning but also the fact of how FB works! DUH!

And now that I understand what this thread is about, and that I was, in a sense, totally 'off topic', and that I made a complete fool of myself by clumsily posting my erroneous response three times, if may still offer my (by now very humble opinion) I totally agree with your original post.

Ths subject of email notifications should reflect the subject - or 'topic' - of the thread.

Re:Notification emails 8 Months, 1 Week ago
right. so this topic hasn't been touched on for 9 months?

any advance on the situation.

I have the latest copy of Fireboard, and my notification emails to my users still have the subject "[forum name] at [HTTP SERVER]".

The worst thing about it for me, is that it clearly gets the HTTP SERVER name from the root access and not from Joomla, as it shows my proper server name. except I want it to show something else. (for example [HTTP SERVER]/joomla).

any ideas for a hack on this?

Cheers,
ps - i have ticked the box to be notified of replies!

Just to chime in... I'm still waiting to see if anything comes of this 'feature request' though to judge from the lack of activity here I'm inclined to doubt it.
