wysiwyg HTML instead of BBCode 1 Year, 5 Months ago
I wish FB would use a wysiwyg editor like TinyMCE or JCE.

All of joomla uses it, so a major component like a forum would certainly benefit from it.

Thanks for a great forum.

I saw WYSIWYG editor once on a vb forum

it wasnt really cool , it was a waste of bandwidth in my opinion and make pages load much slower.

but I don't mind makeing it as a plugin

I agree with yair. As I asked in this thread: www.bestofjoomla.com/component/option,co...view/id,280/catid,3/ we also would need the possibillity to use Wysiwyg HTML instead if pure BB-Code.
It could actually be a choise för the webmaster what to use.

Any progress about this, a yes or a no?

As I also mentioned there, and have nog been answered int htath thread is if it might be able to let users create their own polls in the thread.

IMHO, BB codes are for programmers, not for ordinary folks, and if you add to it working in RTL language like Arabic or Hebrew it becomes quite messy.

About the bandwith, you may be correct but I am sure there are technical solutions for it like browser caching, or downloading in background or...

I agree with you too. We had this discussion yesterday with Aliyar. The problem with WYSIWYG apart from bandwidth is its security risks. We have to have a very nice and light editor with basic functions and clean the code very efficiently before. If you know of such an editor that works with jQuery please let me know. I myself don#t like BBcode and I'm sure many people just cant use it.

I don't mind typing a few brackets in the name of security!

danialt: Sounds great that someone look into this. I know there is a security issue with WYSIWYG but if admins on the site is aware of it and if there is an option to use either Wysiwyg or BB-Code then the responsibiltiy lies on the admin of the site.

I will help searchig for a light editor that might be useful.

As I believe, most of the people today are used to text editing applications like MS-Word and not BBcode from the days before the GUI interface was invented (they were called bulletin boards and the modem were 2400 baud, used mainly by computer geeks).

As for security, one strip_tag() call can clean all the possibly risky tags like <script>, plus other measures can be taken.

As for the bandwidth, it is not that much of an issue too, since FB uses a seperate page for writing one's response anyway. I'm sure there is a lightweight wysiwyg edit, maybe a stripped down version of popular editors like FCKEditor, TinyMCE etc.

I just cannot be convinced why when my users enter article or write a blog entry into a great CMS like joomla they use wysiwyg editor like JCE, and answering a post on the forum they have to struggle with ancient codes?

I saw a thread in joomlaboard's forum where this same question came up, why doesn't joomlaboard supports tinyMce. The answer the developers gave was that it was up to the tinyMce folks to integrate it into the board. I tend to disagree. What would it be if it was also the answer of Joomla developers??

Well I agree with you. I hate BBCode too. I need time to just get rid of it.

well, then there is no need for an editor, if you are going to strip all the tags
