As you know, there is allowed tags parameter where you can specify the tags you want to allow like <b>, <i>, <img> etc.

Can you tell me what is involved in it? Maybe I'll take it upon myself. The way I see it is we need to replace the textarea with a call to let's say TinyMCE, run a query to replace with <b>, with </b> etc in all the existing msgs.

In the past when I was looking for a simple editor, I was quite fond of RTE:

On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of wysiwyg editors - they distract from the real purpose of the forum, and that is sharing information - not posting fancy font designs and pictures - something that many users will surely do. However, it can be left for the each admin to decide.

I was thinking exactly like you too, then i started managing a diet site with lot of users and believe me, this is what they want to do, not to share information. It is fun of their day. They like lot of colours and moving marquees,... They thought me lot of things

Another problem would be the lack of standard board in most pre packaged editors like RTE or tiny. Code blocks, quotes, smileys, topic icons, subject, etc., etc. would all have to be added to whatever editor was chosen.

My suggestion would be to still have bbcode as the back end of your wysiwig so as not to introduce new security risks. Have a normal mode and a preview as you type mode on two different tabs. If you get my meaning. Vbulletin style, is what I'm getting at.

They do a good job of providing wysiwyg without security problems.

Turns out a lot of boards have plugins for this type of thing I'm describing.

phpbb, vbulletin, burning board, an mybb, first two have it built in, second two are plugins.

Here's a link to the mybb style one. As in my description, there is a design mode, and a bbcode mode.

complete with captcha, the ability to disable html, etc.

Might be a good place to start if one was inclined, might be easier to port than start from scratch. Just get rid of the dang MS icons in it.

Is it possible to use a plugin/mod for fireboard, or we have to tweak the code and than upgrading for future releases are gonna be problematic?

I like your idea more. a wysiwyg editor for bbcode is the better solutions. can you find free versions?

This is very nice as far as the advanced options like google, youtube, quote, code, marquee etc.

My point is that for simple GUI operations like bold, underline, font type, font size, color etc, it should be wysiwyg like TinyMCE. Did anyone tried to edit a text in a RTL language to change the position of a bbcode? it is next to impossible.

I wish there could be a solution that include both simple TinyMCE-like operations with smart bbcode for the advanced features.
