Move individual post / post and replies 1 Year, 3 Months ago

One thing that I have noticed in JB in the past is the inability to move an individual post, or a post and it's replies to a new thread, or new forum. The only mechanism that allows for moving a post is with the first post in a thread, and that forces you to move it to another forum entirely, and keep the same name.
The move post for moderators should be very flexible.
One should be able to select a post, and copy, or move it to a new thread in the same forum, a new thread in a different forum, appended to an existing thread in the same, or a different forum, copy or move it alone, or with replies to it, and move it with or without a shortcut/ghost to it. The ability to leave a shortcut/ghost should be optional, and OFF by default. Ghosts should automatically disappear after a specific time period, or be removable, without removing the entire thread it points to.
Again this is with individual posts within a thread, with or without it's replies, NOT just the first post in the thread which moves the entire thing somewhere else.
As you know, every post in the messages table has a parent id, and replies to specific posts, and not the thread in general, create a reply with that post as the parent, so it is possible to do what I'm saying. In addition, most of what I'm suggesting should be possible by recycling existing code.
Now for the disclaimer.
I know what your thinking, "If it's so easy, why not do it yourself?"
Well, my php is not that hot, and I don't know where to look. I have an understanding of languages and programming in general, and not specifically with php. However, I can muddle my around a bit if I know where to look. I've done a few customizations on my JB board, with lightbox for images, etc. However, nothing all that complicated.
However, I think this is a base functionality, and usability feature that will put it on par with other board's, move, copy post features. I know we're not exactly competing here, but in my opinion, why create the lowest common denominator? If that's the goal, why even try? Comparability, not competition. As a base feature type of thing, I think it, along with things like polls and other standard board features are higher in priority than many of the bling based feature suggestions, which are cool, but ultimately unnecessary.
I do know that this has been posted before as well, it just hasn't been explained well. So I thought I'd give a good detailed explanation of how it might look in implementation.
Regards,
Rich

I agree with this functionality request 100%. I have had a situation recently where someone posted a reply to the wrong thread on a Fireboard BBS that I manage which can't be moved.
Please could the developers consider this very useful mod.

I moved from SMF to FireBoard only a few weeks ago, and am *aghast* that this function is not available. I would consider this among the most basic (and common!) of administrative functions.
Is there *no* way of doing this? I cannot fathom a board of any considerable size not needing a single post moved from time to time...
Like the OP, the scope of my php coding skill is narrow, and I feel like my only option here is to flail my arms in the air and yell "Help!"

Is this on the STABLE release? That function is available in 1.0.3. No need to be "aghast".

I am using 1.0.3 stable. If this function is indeed available, it has either been cunningly hidden or I am stupider than the average bear; or a combination of the two.
For clarity, I have a topic with one reply, but the reply was posted incorrectly (in the wrong topic). I need to move only the *reply*, not the original post or whole topic. There is a "MOVE" button on the *original* post, but not on the reply.
After mulling it over a bit, I am afraid "aghast" is the most fitting word. Other characterizations could include "surprised", "frustrated" and "crestfallen". "Surprised" was too mild, "frustrated" implied that I was angry; and I am not, but am rather *very* appreciative of this fine forum and would be eager to help if I had the programming chops to actually do some *good*... And "crestfallen" implied that I had given up, when in reality I know that an open source effort like this know no bounds in its collaborative ability to address its user's needs!
If this function does not exist, then I hope this thread will indicate a need for someone who knows their stuff to implement it. In an open source project, this is exactly how lay-users can "help"; by providing usability feedback, in spite of the fact that most of us are unable to author a solution.
If this function does exist somewhere, somehow, I will gladly go sit in the corner with my dunce cap if this thread will serve someone in the future... So... Can someone walk myself and the others who are having this problem through either the process of moving a single post to a different topic or board, or send us to a URL with a tutorial?
Thanks!

I see now. I just needed some clarification. You are correct. Surely it should not be too hard to extend the function to individual posts.

Just to add my "pennies worth" as well. Please please make this function available. It will moderation extremely difficult without it. Thank you in advance for all your efforts (and keep up the great work)

I'm on board as well! You have the most wonderful forum system, the price is right ...But in just the week since I launched our new site and have had the forums up, I've already accumulated a reply to a post that's in the wrong topic alltogether, and just that reply needs to be moved to another place in the forums as a reply to another post - I looked this morning assuming it could be done in the frontend of my own site, then came here and searched and I found this thread, and much to my dismay, found that it can't be done... I don't have the programming skills either to do this mod, but with my limited skills, it seems that it is just a logical extension of already existing capabilities... this would be a great hack or mod if someone could create it!
that said, this is the coolest and smoothest forum system for joomla available (obviously) and thank you to everyone who's put their time and effort into its creation!
